Breast Augmentation Procedure Steps

Breast augmentation is one of the major cosmetic surgery procedures, which involves several steps. Different surgical techniques may be applied to perform this procedure, but the steps involved will largely remain the same in each case. The procedure can be customized to match with the unique needs of a patient.

During the pre-operative consultation, the surgeon will explain the various steps involved in breast augmentation. This will allow the patient to have more familiarity with the procedure and get past her initial anxiety about the surgery. Patients in Chicago, IL and surrounding communities have an opportunity to receive breast augmentation from board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Jacob Bloom.

Anesthesia

Once the patient is brought into the operating room, she will be placed under anesthesia. General anesthesia or deep sedation is usually applied for breast augmentation surgery, which may be administered by an anesthesiologist or a registered anesthetist nurse. After the surgery is complete, the patient will be brought out of anesthesia.

Grogginess, nausea and other mild side effects may linger on for a few hours, after which the patient is usually allowed to go home. She should, however, have someone responsible to drive her back home and preferably have someone stay over for the first one or two days to assist with the household chores.

Placing the Incisions

After anesthesia, the surgeon will place discreet incisions in pre-determined locations, which could be below the breast crease, or around the areolar circumference. The surgeon will place the incisions in such a way as to keep the subsequent scars well-hidden.

The size and location of incisions will be determined at the time of advance surgical planning. The patient’s breast anatomy, the choice of implant type and size, and the patient’s personal aesthetic goals will be taken into account. Patient’s feedback will be taken at every step during the breast augmentation plastic surgery planning process.

Implant Placement

The surgeon may place the breast implants under the pectoral muscle or in front of the pectoral muscle immediately behind the breast tissue. The implant placement will be decided after assessing the implant size and considering the unique breast anatomy of the patient. The pros and cons of each placement option will be informed to the patient to help her make a well-considered choice.

Wound Closure

Once the implant placement and adjustment is done, the surgeon will close the incisions with dissolvable sutures. No temporary drain tubes are needed in Dr. Bloom’s breast augmentation procedures. The patient will be advised to keep the incision areas clean and dry to minimize infection risks.

Bandages and Surgical Bra

The incision areas will be wrapped in bandages after the surgery to protect the wound. The bandages will be replaced in a day or two with a special surgical bra, which should be worn for several weeks. Committed and judicious cosmetic surgeon Dr. Bloom receives patients from Chicago, IL, Hinsdale, IL and Elk Grove Village, and nearby areas for breast augmentation and various other procedures.

How Long Does It Take To Heal After Breast Augmentation Surgery?

What is the Price Tag for Breast Reduction Surgery?

Improved surgical techniques and innovative breast implant qualities have made breast augmentation cosmetic surgery procedure less invasive and less painful over the years. However, the procedure still involves a significant recovery process to ensure a sustainable and desirable final outcome. The surgeon’s recovery instructions should be carefully followed by the patient for best results.

Dr. Jacob Bloom is a board certified plastic surgeon providing breast augmentation and various other surgical and non-surgical aesthetic procedures. Dr. Bloom and his team will be accessible to the patient throughout the recovery process and help address any concerns that may arise. Dr. Bloom provides breast augmentation to patients in Chicago, IL and surrounding locations.

Estimated Downtime

The patient should be prepared for a downtime of about one week after breast augmentation plastic surgery. She should take adequate rest in the first two to three days, but take short walks at home and perform light movements to maintain the blood flow. Care should be taken to avoid any extra strain in the incision areas.

Downtime is much reduced if the implant placement is done subglandularly, but a submuscular implant placement will require a few more days to recover. In any case, most patients are able to return to their regular routine or go back to work in about 10 to 14 days after breast augmentation. Heavy lifting of weights, bending and performing vigorous exercises should be avoided for about four weeks.

Surgical Bra

The patient will be required to wear a special surgical bra, particularly if she has received a submuscular implant placement. The bra should be worn at all times except when taking a bath. Patients who undergo a subglandular implant placement may only require a normal bra without underwire because the incisions will be smaller in this case.

A wrap-style bandage or surgical bra during recovery will help to harmonize the implant with the breast tissue and muscle. Patients can use this bra until the healing is over so that the breasts can acquire their full new shape and regain firmness. Accomplished cosmetic surgeon Dr. Bloom receives patients from Chicago, IL and nearby areas for breast augmentation.

No Smoking

Smoking and post-surgical healing do not go together. The nicotine in the tobacco may lead to the shrinking of blood vessels, resulting in reduced oxygen levels in the blood. This can hamper the function of RBCs, slowing down the recovery and increasing the risk of complications.

Prescription Pain Medications

For the first three to five days following breast augmentation, the patient may take pain meds as prescribed by the surgeon. This will provide relief against the initial pain and soreness in the breast area. Driving should be avoided during the time when the patient is on pain meds.

Follow-up Visits

The patient may have to visit the surgeon’s office a day after the procedure to have the bandages replaced with a surgical bra. But some surgeons may only call the patient for a first follow-up appointment at the end of first week. Drain tubes and sutures may be removed during this appointment.

Breast Augmentation Plastic Surgery Recovery

Breast augmentation cosmetic surgery procedure has become relatively safer and less invasive over the years due to innovations in surgical techniques. However, it is still a major surgery and involves a considerably recovery component to ensure sustainable and desirable results. The patient should be prepared to diligently follow the surgeon’s recovery instructions.

Dr. Jacob Bloom is a board certified plastic surgeon providing breast augmentation and various other surgical and non-surgical aesthetic procedures to patients in Chicago, IL and surrounding locations. Dr. Bloom and his team will engage with the patient through the recovery phase to help her have a safe and comfortable recovery.

Estimated Downtime

The patient should be prepared to spend at least one week at home after breast augmentation plastic surgery. During this period, she should take adequate rest, but from the second day she can begin to perform light activities and do short walks within the home. However, any contact with the incision areas should be avoided to minimize infection risks, and minimal strain should be put on the incisions.

The overall recovery as well as downtime will differ between patients, depending on the incision size, implant placement, the surgical expertise of the operating surgeon, and the patient’s natural healing ability. In most cases, the patient can resume their normal routine in about one to two weeks. But vigorous exercises and heavy lifting of weights should be avoided for an additional two weeks.

Post-Surgical Garments

If the patient has undergone a submuscular implant surgery, she will be required to wear a surgical bra during the recovery phase. The bra should be worn at all times except when bathing. For subglandular implant placement, the patient may only need a regular bra without underwire because the incisions will be smaller in this case.

A wrap-style bandage or a surgical bra will support the harmonizing between the implant and the breast tissue and muscle. Patient can use this bra until the healing has improved and the breasts have acquired their full new shape. Dedicated cosmetic surgeon Dr. Bloom receives patients from Chicago, IL and nearby areas.

No Smoking

Smoking and post-surgical healing do not go together. The nicotine content in tobacco will cause shrinkage in the blood vessels, leading to reduced blood oxygen levels. This will obstruct the function of RBCs, slowing down the recovery and increasing the risk of complications.

Pain Management

Mild pain medications will usually be prescribed by the surgeon for the first week of recovery. This will keep the patient comfortable till the soreness and bruising improves. Driving and any other activity that requires full alertness should be avoided while the patient is using pain meds.

Follow-up Appointments

The patient may be required to visit the surgeon’s office a day after the procedure to remove bandages and have them replaced with a surgical bra. But some surgeons may only schedule the first post-operative appointment at the end of the first week. Temporary drains and sutures may be removed at this time, and further appointments may be scheduled as necessary.

Breast Augmentation Plastic Surgery Candidates

Women primarily want to have breast augmentation cosmetic surgery for aesthetic reasons, whether to increase the size of disproportionately small breasts, make the breasts more symmetrical, or simply to create a more voluptuous look. However, in some cases, breast augmentation may be required as part of breast reconstruction to restore the breast appearance after a mastectomy.

Dr. Jacob Bloom is a board certified plastic surgeon providing breast augmentation and several other cosmetic and reconstructive surgical procedures. Dr. Bloom will objectively determine the suitability of a woman for breast enhancement before recommending her for this procedure. He provides breast augmentation to patients in Chicago, IL and surrounding locations.

Need for Breast Enhancement

The surgeon would first like to understand the patient’s reasons for seeking breast augmentation plastic surgery. The patient should be prepared to explain her innate need or desire to have larger breasts or what exactly about her breast appearance may be bothering her. Some of the reasons why women seek breast augmentation include:

  • To achieve a more appealing and feminine look
  • To restore breast volume following pregnancy or weight loss
  • To make the breasts more symmetrical
  • To increase the size of naturally small breasts
  • To correct birth related deformities in one or both breasts
  • To reconstruct one or both breasts after a mastectomy or a breast tissue injury
  • To enhance self-esteem and personal body image

The candidate should develop realistic expectations from breast augmentation by reviewing as many before and after photographs as possible. Focused and committed cosmetic surgeon Dr. Bloom receives patients from Chicago, IL and nearby areas for breast augmentation.

Health Pre-requisites

The patient’s health status should be generally good before she undergoes breast augmentation surgery. Her health records will be closely reviewed to determine her fitness for this procedure. The surgeon will also review the skin availability and elasticity in the breast area. Specialized mammograms may have to be ordered in some cases. The patient should transparently disclose all health related issues for her own benefit.

Patients with a history of smoking should clearly inform the surgeon about it. The candidate will also be required to submit a list of all prescription and non-prescription medications and supplements that she may be currently using. The surgeon may require her to stop or alter the schedule of certain medications, and quit smoking for a minimum specified time period.

The candidate should ideally have a moderate and stable body weight, and should not be suffering from any untreated infections or bleeding tendency. She should not be currently pregnant or nursing, and should be free from any cancerous or pre-cancerous tissue in the breast area.

Age Requirements

To receive silicone implants, the candidate should be above the age of 21, and in case of saline implants, she should be above the age of 18, as per the FDA requirements. In exceptional circumstances, a woman below the age of 18 may be eligible for breast implants to correct congenital deformities or breast tissue injuries.

Breast Augmentation Plastic Surgery Before and After Photos

Breast augmentation currently ranks as the number one cosmetic surgery procedure in the US, as per the ASPS data. During the pre-operative consultation, the surgeon will educate the patient about various aspects of the procedure, and may also present breast augmentation before and after photographs.

The first concern of a responsible surgeon will be to ensure that the patient clearly understands everything about the procedure and makes a well-informed decision. Patients in Chicago, IL and surrounding locations have an opportunity to receive breast augmentation from board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Jacob Bloom.

What are Breast Augmentation Before and After Images?

Before and after images in case of breast augmentation plastic surgery refer to a set of pictures belonging to an earlier patient who has undergone the same procedure with a satisfactory outcome. The set includes images taken before the surgery and after the surgery at a stage when the post-op swelling has been resolved and full effects of breast augmentation are visible.

The surgeon will take care to ensure that these photographs are obtained with the express consent of the patient and presented before new patients in an appropriate and discreet manner. The surgeon’s only goal in this exercise is to help new patients receive transparent information about breast augmentation and be clear about what the procedure can or cannot do for them.

Benefits

Breast augmentation is one of the more customizable plastic surgery procedures. The patient will have a choice in breast implant type and size, incision locations, and implant positioning in the breast tissue. These aspects can be customized in consultation with the patient.

In some cases, it may be better to perform breast augmentation in conjunction with breast lift or another procedure. In all situations, the patient is better placed to make appropriate decisions when she has access to breast augmentation before and after photos. Committed cosmetic surgeon Dr. Bloom receives patients from Chicago, IL and nearby areas.

Reasonable Expectations

Deeply satisfying results in breast augmentation are often achieved by women who have a positive state of mind, clear aesthetic priorities, and reasonable expectations. Therefore, an experienced surgeon will prefer to present breast augmentation before and after photos at the very first appointment, and will encourage the patient to review as many photos as possible.

This will help the patient to know exactly what to expect and what not to expect from breast augmentation. Augmentation surgery will lift sagging breasts, but is only designed to enlarge the breast appearance and volume. When patient is fully clear, she will be in a better position to appreciate the final outcome and will have minimal chance of facing disappointment from it.

Photos on the Web

Surgeons having their own practice website can upload breast augmentation before and after photos in a dedicated Photo Gallery section on the site. This will enable new patients to access the photos freely from their home or office before they are even ready to visit the surgeon for a personal consultation. The photos can also be disseminated via social media photo sharing sites such as Facebook, Google+, Instagram, and Pinterest.

What has been the catalyst for change in this arena is digital technology. Digital technology has been embraced by one industry after another and the plastic surgery community is certainly one of them. Now any couple, certainly any woman, can make pivotal decisions in regards to breast augmentation from their own home. They do not need to have lengthy conversations with Dr. Bloom or any other surgeon about this notion.

This is because the vivid detail of these digital pictures on the website allow the patient to make an accurate decision since they know what to expect. This decreases the pressure on the patient and on the surgical team.

How much does Breast Augmentation Plastic Surgery Cost?

How to Choose the Best Breast Lift Plastic Surgeon in Chicago?

Breast augmentation is primarily an elective cosmetic surgery procedure, which will not get covered by health insurance under most circumstances. Therefore, cost becomes an important starting point for many women seeking to increase their breast size. At the time of initial consultation, the breast surgeon will discuss various aspects of the procedure, including its costs.

Dr. Jacob Bloom is a board certified plastic surgeon providing breast augmentation and other procedures for the breast, body and face. Dr. Bloom and his team will address the patient’s questions about cost, insurance and financing, and help her make a well-considered choice. He provides breast augmentation to patients in Chicago, IL and surrounding locations.

Fee of the Plastic Surgeon

The fee charged by the surgeon is a key component in the overall cost of breast augmentation. The fee will vary depending on the qualifications, experience and recognition of the surgeon in the field. Breast augmentation plastic surgery is a personal journey for a woman, and she should choose the best surgeon for her needs, while treating the surgeon’s fee as a secondary consideration in this decision.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) recommends that patients should choose the most appropriate surgeon for their needs. A board certified plastic surgeon will typically invest in best practices, cutting edge technologies, continuing education, and latest safety protocols.

Surgical Venue Costs

The surgeon may perform breast augmentation at a hospital, a surgical center, or a private surgical suite. The associated costs and benefits would vary in each case. In case the procedure is performed at a freestanding surgical center, it should ideally be accredited. Such facilities will maintain the quality standards and have competent staff.

Some surgeons may have operating privileges at a local hospital, and may like to perform breast augmentation in a safe and fully equipped hospital environment. The overall cost may marginally go up in this case. The patient can make a final choice in consultation with the surgeon.

Cost and Quality Relationship

Cost cannot be the sole determinant of quality in surgical procedures because sometimes a highly trained and qualified surgeon may charge a lower fee than another surgeon with lesser credentials. However, if a surgeon quotes an exceptionally low or alluring price, the patient should exercise her judgment and do some due diligence.

Hidden expenses may be involved sometimes, or the quality may be compromised at some stage of the procedure. Patients should know the costs of the surgical venue, the fee charged by the anesthesiologist or anesthetist nurse, and the cost of saline, silicone or ultra cohesive breast implants. Focused cosmetic surgeon Dr. Bloom receives patients from Chicago, IL and nearby areas.

Third Party Financing

Patients have the option to get the breast augmentation procedure financed through professional medical care financing companies. These companies offer loans that are specially designed to meet the needs of patients seeking elective procedures. Competitive interest rates, low monthly installments, and quick loan approvals are some of the common features of these loans in most cases.

About Breast Augmentation Plastic Surgery | Chicago

breast lift, breast augmentation

Over 4.5 million breast augmentation cosmetic surgery procedures were performed in the US between 1997 and 2012. It currently ranks as the number one procedure in the US in terms of popularity, according to the figures released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). Innovations in implant qualities and newer, less invasive surgical techniques have contributed to the growing demand for breast augmentation.

The procedure is designed to improve proportion and increase the breast size and volume, or simply make the breasts look more voluptuous. Breast implants may also be used in breast reconstruction following a mastectomy. Dr. Jacob Bloom is a board certified plastic surgeon providing breast augmentation to patients in Chicago, IL, and surrounding communities.

Candidacy

Suitable candidates for breast augmentation plastic surgery may include women who:

  • Are bothered by the appearance of naturally small breasts
  • Want to have voluptuous breasts solely for cosmetic appeal
  • Are unhappy with the asymmetrical breasts
  • Want to restore breast volume following pregnancy or weight loss
  • Need correction of congenital defects in one or both breasts
  • Need to go through breast reconstruction with implants

Customizing the Procedure

An experienced cosmetic surgeon will customize breast augmentation to meet the unique needs of a patient. Customizability of this procedure is one of the reasons for its popularity. The patient will closely engage with the surgeon to determine what should be the size and type of breast implants, what surgical technique should be applied, where the incisions may be located, and how the implants should be placed in the breast tissue.

Types of Implants

Patients will have option to choose between saline and silicone implants, both of which are FDA approved. Silicone implants are more popular because of their more natural touch and feel and better aesthetics. Implant sizes range from 120 cc to 960 cc, and the shapes may be round or anatomical. Dr. Bloom receives patients from Chicago, IL, and nearby areas for breast augmentation.

Incision and Implant Placement

Incisions for breast augmentation may be placed along the breast crease at the base of the breast, in the underarm, or around the lower half of the areola. In exceptional cases, a TUBA incision around the navel may also be used. Implants can be placed above the pectoral muscle, behind the breast tissue or under the pectoral muscle. The surgeon will help the patient make these decisions during the surgical planning process.

Surgical Procedure

Breast augmentation surgery may be performed with the patient under general anesthesia or IV sedation. Incisions will be discreetly placed in pre-determined locations, and the surgeon will create a breast pocket to accommodate the implants. The implant will inserted through the incision and placed in the pre-planned position and adjusted into its place. Incisions will be closed with removable or dissolvable sutures.

Recovery

Most patients will be able to return to their regular routine or go back to work in about 10 to 14 days. Bruising will subside from the second week, but swelling will gradually disappear over several weeks or months.

Dr. Bloom and his team of experts at the medical spa do not believe in a cookie cutter or one size fits all approach. A customized treatment approach allows the providers at the med spa to deliver targeted, minimally or non-invasive treatments with maximum effectiveness. The patient’s personal goals are incorporated to configure the procedure to their specific requirements.

Expertise of a Surgeon

Injectable procedures such as Botox and dermal fillers may appear to be simple on the surface, but these are highly potent treatments for the delicate facial structures. If administered wrongly or in wrong volumes, these treatments can lead to undesirable results, sometimes with negative long-term effects.

Therefore, it is critically important for patients to choose a fully equipped and qualified medical spa, where safety and satisfaction of the patients is a paramount condition. Patients should perform their due diligence, visit the doctor’s website and compare the costs and benefits before making a final decision about non-surgical cosmetic procedures.

For injectable treatments, Dr. Bloom’s med spa provides Juvederm Ultra and Ultra Plus for facial anti-aging, Juvederm Voluma for cheek augmentation, Restylane Silk for lip enhancement, Kybella for double chin reduction, and Botox for the reduction of frown lines and crow’s feet to patients in Chicago, IL and nearby areas.
