Reconstructive Surgery

Are you under the impression that we only perform aesthetic treatments at Bloom Plastic Surgery? While it may be true that cosmetic treatments are a large part of Dr. Jacob Bloom’s practice, he continues to perform hundreds of reconstructive procedures every year.  Whether performed under local anesthesia in the office, or utilizing the operating room at the surgical center or hospital, Dr. Bloom enjoys tackling some of the most complicated cases in plastic surgery.  We are proud to be a trusted practice by colleagues throughout Chicagoland  and have been honored by Chicago Magazine on their Top Doctor list for several years running.   If you are in need of reconstructive plastic surgery, we recommend connecting with the experienced staff at Bloom Plastic Surgery so we can help you navigate the process.

Mohs Reconstruction:   For those patients undergoing a skin cancer removal surgery by a Mohs surgeon you will likely be referred to our office depending on the location and complexity of the potential defect.  Alternatively, if you have an upcoming Mohs procedure you can request coordinating your reconstruction with Dr. Jacob Bloom.  Our staff will work diligently to coordinate with your Mohs surgeon to assist in your reconstructive surgery in an expedited manner.  Depending on your overall health and the complexity of the defect after surgery, this type of reconstruction can be completed under local anesthesia, sedation or general anesthesia.

Breast Reconstruction:   Typically Dr. Bloom will work directly with a breast oncologist to configure a coordinated plan to begin a patient’s breast reconstruction on the day of the mastectomy procedure.   Dr. Jacob Bloom utilizes multiple types of implant and expander based reconstruction in his practice.  In addition to primary breast reconstruction, Dr. Bloom also performs revisionary cases including but not limited to autologous fat grafting, implant removal and exchanges.

Hand Surgery:   Many conditions of the skin and soft tissue of the hand are appropriate for treatment on an outpatient basis.  Dr. Bloom utilizes his advanced training in hand surgery in the Harvard Medical System in Boston when treating a multitude of hand ailments.  We work closely with hand therapists in the Western Suburbs and the city of Chicago.  Ensuring you have the right tools to recover appropriately from your surgery.

Trauma:  When accidents happen, Dr. Bloom is typically the first phone call for referring physicians, emergency rooms and patients alike.  Typically trauma occurs in the form of a cut or laceration but can also include facial bone fractures, dog bites and burns.  At Bloom Plastic Surgery, we pride ourselves in handling these challenging situations swiftly so that you have somewhere to turn in your time of need.

Scar Revision:  Unfortunately when accidents happen, a scar can form in its wake. Dr. Bloom can assist you in your scar management from the time of initial injury and beyond.  While scars are typically minimized with proper initial treatments, poor scarring can occur as a result of intrinsic factors such as genetic predispositions to both keloid and hypertrophic scarring.  Regardless of the cause, Dr. Bloom can help you manage scars with a spectrum of options including, minimally invasive therapies as well as surgical scar revision techniques.

Skin Cancer Removal:  Once diagnosed by your dermatologist or primary care physician, a skin cancer will typically require an excisional procedure to aid in reducing the local recurrence of this disease process.  Thankfully most skin cancers of the body can be excised under local anesthesia, eliminating the need for a trip to the operating room.  For skin cancers of the head and neck a referral to a Mohs surgeon is typically appropriate.  For all other cases, Dr. Bloom will excise the skin cancer with a surrounding margin to assist in this process.  Once removed, the specimen will be sent to pathology to confirm a full excision has been performed.
