Brazilian Butt Lift (Fat transfer to the Buttock)

Throw nature a curve (or two!)

Whether you were born without volume in your buttock or if you have seen significant changes with age or weight loss, enhancing your backside is now attainable. Board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Jacob Bloom in Chicago, IL can help you add curves that nature forgot to give you! The Brazilian Butt Lift procedure, also known as a fat transfer, butt augmentation, or “BBL”, is a surgical procedure that has significantly gained in popularity over the last decade. The procedure is designed to enhance the size of the buttocks with your own fat cells without the need for implants. The goal of the BBL procedure is to achieve an enlarged and shapely appearance. As with all surgery it is important for patients to be well-informed about their surgical options.

Am I a candidate for a Brazillian Butt Lift?

Patients who have a dissatisfaction with the size or shape of their buttocks may be considered for surgery if they are healthy without underlying medical conditions. To be an ideal candidate, patients should have excess body fat that can be used as a donor site. Common donor sites are the abdomen, love handles, back and thighs. During the consultation Dr. Bloom will address your desired size and evaluate your potential donor sites. The benefit of a BBL procedure is that in addition to an enlargement of the buttock the surrounding body areas will be reduced with standard liposuction a win-win situation! As with all fat transfer procedures, only a portion of fat transfered will fully take. As a result, Dr Bloom will plan to add additional volume at the time of surgery to allow for some postoperative volume loss. Once the fat cells are transferred in the body, they cannot grow back from the areas they were harvested from. However, weight gain after liposuction and fat transfer is still possible because remaining and transferred cells continue to grow and expand. It is critical to maintain a healthy diet and exercise regime and avoid weight gain to maintain long-term results.

Details of the procedure and recovery

The Brazilian Butt Lifts procedure is performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. BBL surgery can take anywhere from 90 minutes to 3 hours, depending upon the scope of the operation. Based on the preoperative evaluation and plan, the procedure will begin with liposuction of the donor sites. Liposuction works by gently using vacuum pressure to remove excess fat cells in the target zones. A cannula, a thin, hollow tube, is inserted under the skin through a small incision. The fat cells are inundated with tumescent fluid which makes them expand and stiffen, enabling them to be suctioned out of the body and harvested for transfer. The fluid also helps reduce discomfort by introducing local anesthetic while minimizing bleeding and bruising. Once an appropriate amount of fat is harvested it is processed and sterilized before being placed meticulously into the superficial buttocks region to create an enviably full, rounded appearance. Care is taken to avoid the deeper structures of the buttock which in order to decrease the risk of serious intraoperative complications.
After your Brazilian Butt Lift surgery, you should be able to return to work within 1-2 weeks, and you will be provided with a compression garment, which you will need to wear for approximately two weeks full time. Compression will be weaned gradually over the first 4-6 weeks to optimize results.. Whenever possible during the first month of the initial healing period, you should try to avoid sitting on your buttocks, or to sit on pillows when sitting is required.
