Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) Candidates

Eyelid lift, clinically known as blepharoplasty, is a relatively minor but sensitive cosmetic surgery procedure because it involves the area around the eyes. The surgeon will closely evaluate the fitness of the candidate before going ahead with this procedure. They will also determine whether the patient is an appropriate candidate for lower or upper eyelid surgery or both.

The patient should disclose all relevant information about their medical and family history, general health and lifestyle in order to have an objective assessment of their candidacy. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Jacob Bloom provides blepharoplasty to patients in Chicago, IL and other towns and neighborhoods across the horizon.

Candidacy

A righteous candidate for eyelid surgery is typically an adult who is unhappy about the appearance of under eye bags, puffy upper lids, or wrinkles and fine lines around the lower or upper eyelids. If the patient’s vision is partially obstructed due to sagging upper lids, they may also benefit from eyelid lift plastic surgery.

But eyelid lift procedure may not be for everyone. A person suffering from certain ophthalmic or medical conditions may have to be excluded from this procedure. The surgeon will determine whether their condition may pose a risk during the surgery or recovery.

Aesthetic Considerations

The eye surgeon will encourage the patient to share their personal aesthetic goals and needs to determine their candidacy.

Tired Looking Eyes

If saggy skin or wrinkles and fine lines around the eyelids are making the eyes appear older and more tired, the condition can be corrected with blepharoplasty.

Puffy Upper Eyelids

Puffiness or under eye bags can be eliminated and a smoother eyelid appearance can be restored with eyelid surgery.

Excess Upper Lid skin

Loose skin in the upper eyelid area may create a wrinkled look as well as obstruct the vision in some cases. Such candidates can benefit from eyelid surgery.

Other Requisites

An ideal candidate for eyelid surgery should be:

Over 18 years of age

Although most patients seek blepharoplasty after the age of 35 or 40, a few may need it earlier if droopy or baggy eyelids run in the family.

In appropriate health

The candidate should not have any such underlying medical condition that could interfere with the surgery or delay the recovery. Mental and emotional health of the patient will also be considered.

Have reasonable expectations

An ideal candidate will have a positive mindset and reasonable expectations from the procedure. They will have a fair idea of what the eyelid lift procedure can or cannot do for them.

Eye Health

Patients with ophthalmic conditions such as glaucoma and dry eye may not be ideal candidates because of a higher risk of complications. Individuals with lack of proper orbital anatomy or the inadequate structure to support the procedure may also be excluded from eyelid surgery.

The condition of the bone and adjacent support structure will be considered while determining the candidate’s suitability for upper or lower eyelid surgery. Tremendous and reliable cosmetic surgeon Dr. Bloom receives patients from Chicago, IL and other cities and suburbs across the region for eyelid surgery.
