Overview
At Bloom Plastic Surgery in Chicago and Hinsdale, our experienced aesthetic team creates customized SkinPen treatments to help patients achieve firmer, healthier-looking skin with little downtime. Unlike lasers or more aggressive resurfacing procedures, SkinPen works by stimulating your body’s own natural healing response.
Tiny, controlled microchannels are created in the skin, triggering the production of new collagen and elastin. The result is smoother skin, softer lines and wrinkles, improved acne scars, and a brighter, more youthful complexion, all without surgery or extensive recovery.
What is SkinPen Microneedling?
SkinPen is an advanced collagen induction therapy that creates thousands of precise microchannels in the skin using sterile, medical-grade needles. These controlled micro-injuries activate the body’s natural wound healing process, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin while preserving the integrity of the surrounding tissue.
As new collagen develops over the following weeks and months, skin becomes firmer, smoother, and more even in both texture and tone. SkinPen is FDA-cleared to improve the appearance of acne scars on the face and is also commonly used to address:
What SkinPen Treats
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Enlarged pores
- Uneven skin texture
- Mild skin laxity
- Sun damage
- Hyperpigmentation and post-inflammatory discoloration*
- Surgical scars
- Stretch marks*
*Individual results vary, and some pigmentation concerns may require combination treatment.
SkinPen is safe for all Fitzpatrick skin types and can be performed on the face, neck, chest, hands, and other areas of the body where collagen remodeling is desired.
How to Plan for Your SkinPen Procedure
Every SkinPen treatment begins with a personalized consultation to determine your skincare goals and develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs. During your consultation, your provider will evaluate your skin concerns, review your medical history, and discuss whether SkinPen is the best option or if combining treatments may produce even greater results.
For optimal collagen stimulation, most patients benefit from a series of three treatments spaced approximately four weeks apart, although patients with deeper acne scarring or more advanced signs of aging may require additional sessions.
While many patients notice healthier, more radiant skin within a few weeks, collagen remodeling continues for several months after each treatment, with continued improvements over time. Maintenance treatments one to two times per year can help preserve your results and support long-term skin health.
To ensure the safest and most effective treatment, patients may be advised to temporarily discontinue retinoids, exfoliating products, or certain medications before their appointment. Your provider will review all pre-treatment instructions during your consultation.
The SkinPen Procedure and Recovery
A typical SkinPen treatment takes approximately 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the treatment area. Before the procedure begins, a topical numbing cream is applied to maximize comfort. Many patients describe the treatment as very tolerable, with only mild pressure or vibration during the procedure.
Once the skin is numb, the SkinPen device is gently passed across the treatment area to create precise microchannels at customized depths based on your individual concerns. Following treatment, specialized post-procedure skincare may be applied to help soothe and protect the skin as it begins its natural healing process.
Most patients experience redness similar to a mild sunburn for 24 to 48 hours, with possible mild swelling or tightness. Some patients may notice light flaking or dryness as the skin renews itself over the following several days.
Patients should avoid excessive heat, strenuous exercise, swimming, and sun exposure for the first 24 hours after treatment. Daily use of a broad-spectrum sunscreen and a gentle skincare routine is essential to protect your results and support healthy healing.
