Post Weight Loss

Congratulations! You’ve done the hard work and lost the weight; now it’s time to show off your slim new self!

Losing a significant amount of weight is a long, difficult journey that requires hard work and dedication to your long-term goal, and you know in the end, the benefits of improved health, self-confidence, and self-esteem will be well worth the hard work. So why let the result of your hard work be undermined by excess amounts of loose, sagging skin that no longer fits with your slimmer body?

At Bloom Plastic Surgery in Chicago, IL, our goal is to help you take the final step to realizing your long-term aesthetic goals. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Jacob Bloom will work with you to create a customized body contouring plan designed to remove the excess skin hiding your new, slimmer frame in order to reveal a thinner, naturally-beautiful physique that you will be proud to show off!*

What does body contouring after weight loss involve?

The goal of body contouring surgery after extreme weight loss is to excise loose, saggy, excess skin that has been stretched beyond the point where it can bounce back and regain its original shape, and may, in some cases, also tighten damaged muscles to improve the body’s curves and contours. By removing the excess skin, body contouring surgery brings the skin into alignment with your new, slimmer body shape. Your specific surgery will be individually customized to address your specific problem areas, and may include one or more of the following procedures:

• Face and/or neck lift
• Brachioplasty (arm lift)
• Mastopexy (breast lift)
• Breast Auto-Augmentation (using your own tissue to lift and enhance your breast volume)
• Abdominoplasty/corset trunkplasty (comprehensive contouring of the abdomen and waist)
• Monsplasty (pubic lift)
• Inner and outer thigh lift

Candidates for body contouring surgery must be at or close to their ideal weight for several months, must be in relatively good health, and must not smoke. Weight loss may have been achieved through diet and exercise or through surgical measures such as the lap-band or gastric bypass surgery.

Procedure and recovery details

Because body contouring surgery is highly customized to achieve the unique goals of each patient, Dr. Bloom will review the specific details of your surgical timeline, procedure details, and recovery during your surgical consultation. Generally, the procedure is performed under IV sedation or general anesthesia and will involve a series of incisions carefully placed within the natural folds and creases to minimize, when possible, the appearance of scars.

After the procedure, the incisions will be closed with sutures and covered with steri strips to keep the incisions clean and fight infection. You will be prescribed antibiotics and pain medications, and it is important to take both as directed by Dr. Bloom. Some procedures may require the placement of drains to prevent the build-up of fluid; any drains should be removed 7-14 days after your procedure. A compression garment is typically worn for 1-3 weeks after surgery to help decrease swelling. Most patients find that they require about two weeks of downtime before they are comfortable enough to return to normal activities. Throughout every phase of your surgery, including during your recovery, you will meet frequently with Dr. Bloom to monitor your recovery and healing.
